Miami for LGBTQ Travelers

In January 1977, Miami made history when it passed its gay rights ordinance, banning discrimination based on sexual preference. However, this victory was short-lived for the gay rights community as the ordinance was repealed in June and was not reinstated until 1998.

Since then, there have been more victories. Gay adoption, gay marriage and domestic-partner benefits have all been extended to same-sex couples. Signaling a marked attitude change, Miami as a result is a more-welcoming city to LGBTQ locals and visitors alike.

But whereas other metropolitan areas are known for having "gayborhoods," (travel north to Wilton Manors near Fort Lauderdale to find that), the gay scene in Miami is not as well-defined. Today, LGBTQ travelers will find many gay-friendly areas and activities to explore within straight establishments.

Renowned for nightlife, beaches and Latin culture, it is no surprise that Miami continues to draw thousands of revelers and remains a major stop on the pink party circuit (White Party, Winter Party Festival, Gay Pride). Of course, South Beach, the epicenter of the hottest gay scene, is where to join in on the festivities and raucous good times.

Here are some of the best gay bars and clubs, gay beaches and romantic spots to enjoy while solo traveling, with a partner or just with friends, throughout Miami and Miami Beach.

Throw caution to the wind and sunbathe in the nude or not at this clothing-optional public beach. Many here take advantage to surf and swim in the calm ocean waters.

In need of information on what to do and where to go? Visit the LGBT Visitor Center in South Beach for a treasure trove of maps, brochures, restaurant and hotel discounts and recommendations. One of the first in the country to set up shop, the center offers free WiFi and can assist with last-minute accommodations.

One of the largest LGBT events of the year is White Party Week. It's an unparalleled week of fundraising parties and events culminating with the legendary White Party. More than 15,000 party-goers enjoy six days and nights of nonstop entertainment, while raising awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS prevention.

Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace frequented News Café every day for breakfast and to buy Italian newspapers and magazines. The legendary 24-hour café, bar, newsstand and bookstore serves breakfast all day, lunch and dinner. Plus it is the perfect place for people-watching while sipping a latte or cocktail.

Take a trip to WEAM to set your sights on the largest collection of erotic art in North America. From a gay and lesbian love room, mating masks of various tribes and contemporary art exhibitions, WEAM is also where to find lavish parties and events during White Party and Winter Party festival weekends.
