Broadway fans now can experience a little of the Great White Way on South Beach as the Colony Theatre presents the inaugural South Beach Broadway Series, a 3 concert series with Linda Eder (opening the series at the end of January), Betty Buckley and Billy Porter. The producers of the show, Matthew Lombardo and Rick Murray, are both known for producing shows with great talents like Carol Channing, Tommy Tune, Patti Lupone, Jennifer Holliday and most notably the Broadway Series at the Crown and Anchor in Provincetown. Singer Linda Eder, who started her career with a 12-week run on Star Search before staring on Broadway as “Lucy” in Jekyll and Hyde, launched the series and filled the Colony Theater with adoring fans.
Tony Award-winning Betty Buckley, dubbed “The Voice of Broadway” brings her one-woman show to the stage on February 27 & 28. Buckley, known for her work on Broadway, in television, and in concert, is a quintessential performer and is known around the world. Buckley, a regular on the cabaret circuit, is probably best known for her show-stopping performance of Grizabella the Glamour Cat in Cats where she belted out the now classic song “Memories” every night. Filmgoers may remember her role as the gym teacher in the cult-classic film Carrie. As a singer, Betty Buckley packs theaters and cabarets around the world. She has released 16 solo albums, an amazing feat in the world of musical theater. In 2012 Buckley was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame where her name joins the greatest stars of Broadway. Betty Buckley is a Broadway legend not to miss.
Billy Porter, who closes the series on March 20 & 21, recently wowed Broadway audiences as “Lola” in the smash hit musical Kinky Boots for which he won both at Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Porter’s musical talents extend far beyond Broadway, as he’s a Grammy Award-winning singer, composer, actor, playwright and director. Porter has performed as a guest artist on many albums but it was the recent release of his solo CD “Billy’s Back on Broadway”, a compilation of inspirational songs from the stage that had the theater world filled with excitement. Broadway audiences have been enjoying his performance for years in shows like Miss Saigon, Five Guys Named Moe, Smokey Joe’s Café and Dreamgirls (20th Anniversary Broadway Concert) and his appearance at the Colony will be a treat for Miami audience.
The South Beach Broadway Series runs at the Colony Theatre with Betty Buckley (February 27 & 28) and Billy Porter (March 20 & 21).
