Spasso Cooking Academy

Get behind-the-line with a master chef and learn tips and techniques to take your cooking to the next level. The hands-on classes take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, at the expansive open kitchen at Spasso, a new eatery in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood.

“You don’t need to bring anything to class except ... a good mood. Here, you can ask everything you wanted to ask but were afraid to,” says Chef Gaetano Ascione. After the class, you'll eat the food you’ve cooked, share Italian wine and enjoy a friendly atmosphere.

A native of Naples, Italy, chef Gaetano has worked around the world. Some of his career highlights include serving two U.S. Presidents, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, as Chef de Cuisine at the Georgetown Club in Washington DC. Chef Gaetano has been affiliated with two Two-Star Michelin restaurants in Cannes, France.

Ranked No. 2 on Amazon's list of the 20 most romantic cities in the U.S. for eight years in a row, Miami is no longer just a place for bar-hopping and clubbing. The area has evolved into an arts and culture, foodie and leisure destination. With the many offerings, there are plenty of indulgences for a romantic rendezvous.

Take advantage of the turquoise, pristine waters and miles of white sand and pack a picnic and head to South Beach, catch the sunset, go boating or paddleboard. Surprise your special someone with a sunset cruise along Biscayne Bay or get dressed up for a fancy night out on the town at Red Fish Grill or La Mar, one of the most scenic restaurants offering magnificent bay and ocean views with fresh seafood to spark romance.

Get lost in the tropical oasis of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens or Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, both popular venues for weddings and special occassions. Go ahead and impress your sweetheart with these romantic, memorable date ideas.

Whether it’s watching the sunset or a romantic dinner, the list of romantic things to do in Miami are endless.

This 1916 beautiful, historic mansion set on lushly landscaped formal gardens with Mediterranean-Renaissance architectural courtyards and loggias, is definitely worth the visit. Ideally, plan for a full-day to wander the gardens, see the exhibits inside the home and grab a bite at the café overlooking Biscayne Bay.

It is all about "amore" at this Tuscan fine-dining spot with ocean views and authentic Italian cuisine. Be prepared for a long night of incredible food and an ever-changing wine list. Expect perfection in service and a menu of the finest dishes including chicken liver pate, charred baby octopus, Maine lobster, homemade pastas and more.

What is considered more romantic than a 19th-century opera? The Florida Grand Opera, one of the oldest and most prestigious opera companies in the U.S., presents some of the most beloved operas from Puccini, Mozart and Bizet from Nov.-May at the Arsht Center in Miami or Broward Center for the Performing Arts Center in Fort Lauderdale.

Set amid a lush tropical garden complete with waterfalls and elaborate tikis, the southernmost winery in the U.S., Schnebly’s, offers tropical wines for an exquisite wine tasting. Choose from their sweet avocado , guava, lychee or coconut. If you prefer a cold beer, the winery owners also house a craft brewing company onsite.

As the old saying goes, "the way into a man's heart is through his stomach," this is also true for women. So exploring Little Havana, South Beach and Miami's Wynwood neighborhoods on a food tour sampling their tastiest dishes, sounds like a winning combination to win your companion's affections.

Chihuly sculptures, rare tropical plants, butterfly and humminigbird exhibits abound in the conservation and education-based garden venue. Walk the garden paths to reach the romantic Amphitheater, the Garden House, sunken gardens or arboretum. All perfect places to snap selfies to remember your romantic getaway.

Dine under the stars at the Red Fish Grill for scenic views of Biscayne Bay and the freshest seafood. Located within a county park, Matheson Hammock lures adventurous diners who travel the dark and winding road to reach the waterside seafood restaurant in a former coral rock beach pavilion. Open for dinner only.

Your sweetheart will forever remember an experience cooking and learning behind-the-line with master Chef Gaetano Ascione of the new Spasso restaurant in Coconut Grove. These fun hands-on classes offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays end at the Chef’s Table where you can savor the food you've cooked and enjoy a glass of delicious wine.

No trip to Miami would be complete without the requisite visit to Miami Beach. Renovated in 2014, the park and pier open sunrise to 10 pm every day, offers visitors a bevy of outdoor recreation activities from fishing, biking, picnicking or those seeking to relax, de-stress and simply watch the waves crash on the shore.

A short drive south from Downtown Miami is the city of Coral Gables (also called the "City Beautiful"), a charming, historic area filled with top spots for shopping, dining and culture. Stroll the business district known as "MIracle MIle" to find casual and fine dining, live entertainment, boutiques and specialty shops.

When Gaston Acurio, the ambassador of Peruvian cuisine and owner of one of the world’s “50 Best Restaurants,” looked to expand to Miami, he set his sights on the waterfront at the Mandarin Oriental Miami on Brickell Key. Here, the chef creates modern renditions of traditional dishes including an extensive list of ceviches.

This bayside escape in Palmetto Bay was once the home of its industrialist namesake—Charles Deering. It's a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike looking to explore the nature preserve, exhibits and architecture. The estate also hosts orchestras, an annual seafood festival as well as regular moonlight and garden tours.

Sip handcrafted cocktails prepared by James Beard award nominated mixologists at an off-the-beaten path watering hole. Adorned with twinkling Christmas lights year round and boho chic furniture, drinks are concocted with elixirs, syrups and infusions from the bar's outside garden, and other exotic ingredients from around the world.

Experience Miami from the water on a sunset cruise aboard a 40-foot catamaran. Sail away from Bayside Marketplace in Downtown Miami and wind down to the Rickenbacker Causeway for a first-row seat to the most spectacular sunset and star gazing on a clear night. Cruises available Saturdays and Sundays at 5 pm.

Delano South Beach
Author(s):

With year-round sunshine, sunbathing should be considered a sport in Miami. Surrounded by warm, blue waters leading into ocean breezes, the beaches have long been Miami’s top attraction. Yet there are those that would rather cool off and go for a dip at some of the swankiest pools that can only be found on South Beach.

Many of these coveted destinations allow people who are not hotel guests and locals the opportunity to experience their tropical retreats combined with limited promotions, pool parties, spa treatments, day passes or dining at their signature eateries.

Let us help you uncover the tricks and tips to experience the most sought-after swimming pools and get ready to work on your tan all summer.

Mondrian South Beach

Surrounded by plush daybeds and ivy-covered cabanas, vibrant gardens and hammocks hung from palm trees, guests at Mondrian South Beach can take advantage of one of Miami’s most coveted poolside spots.

The main swimming pool, designed by Marcel Wanders, offers unbeatable views of the bay and city skyline. The pool area and chairs are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with hotel guests receiving first priority. Nonguests can enjoy the pool and day beds daily for a minimum food and beverage purchase of $50 per person. Spa treatments, cocktails and a special menu by chef Dustin Atoigue are also amenities available poolside.

On the weekends, the Mondrian South Beach opens its doors to the public and holds lounge-style pool parties with a relaxed reggae vibe and renowned South Beach DJs.

Mondrian South Beach

The Standard Spa, Miami Beach

The Standard Spa, a bit off-the-beaten-path on Miami Beach's Belle Isle, is a dreamy spot on the water with views of Downtown Miami and the neighboring islands.

This boutique spa hotel boasts an infinity pool with underwater sound system so even when you are underwater you can hear the music. Book a spa treatment of at least $150 or purchase a day pass (Mo-Th $75; Fr-Su $150) for access to the pool, garden, steam room or hammam areas.

The Standard Miami Beach

Nautilus South Beach

Designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus in the 1950s, Nautilus South Beach, with its beach-house design, offers an unpretentious atmosphere.

Among the boutique hotel’s main draws is the heated saltwater pool and teak deck steps from the beach open from sunrise to sunset. Similar to The Standard, the pool features underwater sound speakers to keep the music thumping. Lounge in style by reserving one of the eight private cabanas priced at $250-$350.

Another way to enjoy this glorious pool is by visiting on Saturdays from 4 to 9 pm for the hotel’s “Hello Sailor” pool party. Chill poolside with guest DJs, frozen cocktail specials, light bites, and sun and fun.

Nautilus South Beach

The Villa, Casa Casuarina

Perhaps the most extravagant and stunning pool belongs to The Villa, Casa Casuarina.

During Gianni Versace’s $33 million renovation in 1992, he built the amazing 54-foot-long Million Mosaic Pool, lined with thousands of glittering 24k gold tiles. This literal crown jewel is adorned with mosaics inspired by Versace’s “Marine Vanitas” collection and features ornate nautical patterns and mythological motifs including two-tailed mermaids and Poseidon, god of the sea.

If you are not lucky enough to be staying here, catch a glimpse of this work of art by dining poolside at the Villa’s top-notch restaurant, Gianni’s. With a mouthwatering menu of Italian and Mediterranean dishes, your meal will shine as brightly as the gold tiles of the Million Mosaic Pool.

The Villa, Casa Casuarina in Miami Beach

Delano South Beach

This 14-story hotel was transformed into a destination resort by design superstar Philippe Starck in the 1990s. And its centerpiece was the pool. Considered the Delano's outdoor lobby, the pool’s most iconic and photogenic element is the wrought-iron table and chair found in the shallow end.

For the ultimate seaside retreat, you’ll want to book a poolside bungalow, accented with custom furnishings, a private patio, rainfall showers and the best part—the pool is just steps away.

If staying at Delano is not in the travel plans, join them for “Privileged Sundays,” a weekly pool party from 2 pm to sundown. Locals and travelers alike can revel in Delano South Beach’s luxurious pool, plush daybeds and private cabanas while indulging in poolside spa services by and tunes by artist Nate Ryan and special guests.

SuViche

Launched in 2010, SuViche is the perfect combination of Japanese and Peruvian cuisines. With four locations in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties including Wynwood, Brickell, Miami Beach and most recently Las Olas, SuViche offers a variety of beautifully crafted and explosively flavorful sushi rolls, ceviche and sautéed Peruvian specialties.

Ceviche has long been a source of pride and even national identity in Peru. It even prompted the Peruvian government to recognize ceviche as part of Peru’s national heritage and in 2008, Peru’s Ministry of Production further honored the traditional dish by creating Día Nacional del Ceviche (National Ceviche Day), to be held each year on June 28. Going beyond traditional recipes, SuViche provides fresh, fast and affordable cuisine.

Two SuViche locations, Wynwood and Las Olas, are also home to the first Pisco Bars in South Florida featuring homemade Pisco infusions with fresh herbs, fruits and spices.
